RELEASE DATE: 20 Aug 2017
  • The Asian series leaders win both races during the weekend at Fuji Speedway

Sant’Agata Bolognese/Fuji Speedway, August 20, 2017.

Kei Cozzolino and Afiq Yazid score a double-win, dominating Race 2 after the success of the day before in Race 1. Not to mention that the Italian-Japanese driver Cozzolino was able to seal three victories this weekend at the Fuji Speedway, with a win yesterday behind the wheel of a Lamborghini Huracán GT3 in the Blancpain GT Series Asia race, on the same race card this weekend.

The second race of the Lamborghini Super Trofeo Asia, as part of the fourth round of the season, saw twenty cars on grid, and was thrilling from lights to flag. The #11 Huracán Super Trofeo of Clazzio RacingTeam started from P1 thanks to the pole position secured by Kei Cozzolino in qualifying on Saturday. But after a few corners the lead of the race was taken by the Lazarus Team car #3 with Artur Janosz at the wheel. However, his time at the front lasted only three laps, when Cozzolino was able to regain the position and started his solitary run at the front.

As the pit window for the driver change opened, Cozzolino delivered the Huracán Super Trofeo #11 to Afiq Yazid with a solid ten seconds of advantage, which his teammate managed comfortably for much of his stint. But the last ten minutes of racing had some thrilling moments as light rain began to wet several sectors of the track, making it challenging to drive on slick tires in unpredictable conditions, and in these treacherous conditions, the driving sensitivity emerged of young Englishman Toby Sowery, Artur Janosz’ teammate in the Team Lazarus Huracan #3. Sowery gained tenths on Yazid every lap and managed to dramatically reduce the gap from ten seconds to only 2.8 seconds in the last lap, almost putting him within striking distance of the Clazzio Racing Team car and finishing in second position.
A well-deserved third place was also earned by the duo formed by Liberati and Kaneishi in Emperor Racing car # 19. Starting in P4, the crew had lost positions due to an early drive through penalty due to a false start , but during the race they climbed the standings thanks to their excellent race pace (Kaneishi claimed the fastest lap) and an error-free run.

No less interesting was the competition in other categories. In Pro-Am class, the undisputed protagonist was Rik Breukers: his GDL Racing Huracán #37 started from P14 with Am driver Nigel Farmer at the wheel, who put in an impressive stint, after a mixed weekend from him. In the second part of the race Rik Breukers, Dutch member of the Young Drivers Program of Lamborghini Squadra Corse, was the author of a fantastic comeback that took him to fourth place overall and first in Pro-Am class.

The AM category saw Haryanto and Hwang (X-One Racing # 69) again on the highest step of the podium after winning Race 1, with Hwang rising to gain first position thanks to a well-crafted overtake on Uchida just a few laps from the chequered flag.

Finally, a double victory also for Supachai Weeraborwornpong (Top Speed Racing # 77) in the Lamborghini Cup class, ahead of Italian Gabriele Murroni (Petri Corse) and American Peter Aronson.

The fifth round of the Lamborghini Super Trofeo Asia is scheduled on September 23-24 in China, at the Shanghai International Circuit.
