RELEASE DATE: 06 Apr 2025   |   Sydney

Double victories for PRO pair Leong and Denning with SJM Theodore Racing

Sydney, 6 April 2025 – SJM Theodore Racing’s Charles Leong of Macau and series newcomer Alex Denning of Ireland took the opening wins of the 2025 season as the Lamborghini Super Trofeo Asia made its debut at Australia’s challenging 3.9km Sydney Motorsport Park. The double header season-opener saw all 38 drivers in the 22 Lamborghini Huracán Super Trofeo EVO2s contest two thrilling, uninterrupted 50-minute races on the twisting, undulating track, acquitting themselves superbly on a circuit that was unfamiliar to the majority of the field.

Joining Leong and Denning on the race one PRO podium were series debutants and pole-sitters Singapore’s Ethan Brown and 2024 Lamborghini Young Driver Programme shootout finalist and current Lamborghini Young Professional Driver Hampus Eriksson of Sweden as Leipert Motorsport made a welcome return to the championship. Second in race two was the DW Evans GT’s PRO pairing of Nazim Azman of Malaysia and Frenchman Emilien Carde. Third in both races were BC Racing’s Gavin Huang and Jonathan Cecotto, the pair third in the PRO standings last season.

The PRO-AM class was as hard-fought as the PRO, with Climax Racing’s Liu Kaishun and Cao Qikuan winning race one ahead of team mates Lu Zhiwei and Ling Kang, and Korean squad SQDA-GRIT Motorsport’s Brian Lee Changwoo and Liang Jiatong third. Race two saw Lee and Liang take the win from Liu and Cao, this time with Z.Speed’s Chen Chunhua and Hopin Tung in third.

In what was a strong opening round for Climax Racing, race one AM honours went to series newcomers Li Dongsheng and Li Donghui from reigning Lamborghini Cup champions Hairie and Haziq Oh who this year move up a class. Third in race one were fellow debutants Umar Abdullah and Dypo Fitramadhan of Delta Garage Racing Team by Absolute Racing. It was AM victory in race two for long-time series supporter Suttiluck Buncharoen of True Vision Motorsports Thailand, crossing the line ahead of the Climax pair of Li Dongsheng and Li Donghui, and Leipert Motorsport solo driver Song Jiajun of China.

In the Lamborghini Cup, Siamgas Corse’s Supachai Weeraborwornpong took both wins from title rival Kumar Prabakaran of Batmobile Racing, the pair duelling it out all weekend long.

After two races, Leong and Denning lead the PRO standings, ten points ahead of Brown and Eriksson, while Huang and Cecotto sit third. Liu Kaishun and Cao Qikuan lead the PRO-AM points, just three points ahead of Brian Lee and Liang Jiatong. After their standout debut, Li Dongshen and Li Donghui lead the AM class with a seven-point advantage over Buncharoen, while Weeraborwornpong leads Prabakaran by six points in the Lamborghini Cup standings.

After a sensational season-opener under the wide Australian skies, Lamborghini Super Trofeo Asia is back in action again next month, with round two at the home of the Chinese Grand Prix, the Shanghai International Circuit from May 16-18.

Race 1

Leipert Motorsport PRO driver Hampus Eriksson took pole position for the opening race of the 2025 season, while Liu Kaishun was quickest of the PRO-AM contenders for Climax Racing, P5 overall. Team mate and Chinese compatriot Li Donghui also impressed on his series debut as the fastest AM driver in qualifying one, while Malaysia’s Kumar Prabakaran took the first Lamborghini Cup pole of the year.

As the 22-strong field thundered away at the start, pole-sitter Eriksson, SJM Theodore Racing’s Alex Denning and BC Racing’s Jonathan Cecotto all made lighting getaways, the trio hurtling three abreast into turn one. Cecotto had the edge on his rivals though, propelling his Lamborghini Huracán Super Trofeo EVO2 into the lead. Frustrated at losing his pole advantage, Eriksson briefly dropped to third, before Denning ran wide and the Swede gained a position.

Cecotto began trying to pull away in front, but Eriksson was on the move too, closing the gap and quickly swarming all over the back of the Monegasque.

Right behind the leaders in fourth, Climax Racing’s Liu Kaishun was holding the PRO-AM lead from Z.Speed’s Hopin Tung, while Liu’s team mate Li Donghui was doing a superb job in the AM lead in his first-ever Lamborghini Super Trofeo Asia race. In the Lamborghini Cup battle, Siam Corse’s Supachai Weeraborwornpong had snatched the class lead from his Batmobile Racing rival and class pole-sitter Kumar Prabakaran.

As the pit window opened, Dr. Ma was the first to head in for a driver change having made a successful move on Racegraph’s Gerald Goh before the stop. The Arrows Racing driver handed over to new PRO-AM team mate Weiron Tan, the Malaysian talent rocketing into his stint.

By the time Cecotto headed towards his stop, Eriksson was right on his rear and pushing hard for the advantage, but the pair ultimately dived in to put lane in the same order. Cecotto handed over to Gavin Huang, who headed out in the race lead.

Denning’s team mate Charles Leong in third was an immediate threat to Ethan Brown who had taken the wheel of the Leipert Motorsport car from Eriksson. Leong got alongside the Singapore driver before diving past and into second, and set off on the hunt for the race leader. Next, Huang was caught up in traffic, giving Leong the chance to dive past and snatch the lead.

As Leong disappeared into the distance, Brown took the fight to Huang, desperately trying to rattle the young BC Racing driver into an error. With superb defensive driving, Huang held the series newcomer at bay right up until the clock counted down to zero. Eventually managing to get alongside Huang across the start/finish line of the final lap, Brown made his move and up into second.

In the PRO-AM class, Liang Jiatong grabbed the lead for SQDA-GRIT Motorsport, demoting Climax Racing’s Cao Qikuan, Liu Kaishun’s team mate, to second after a strong run by the pair.

At the flag, a triumphant Leong took victory – his first in the series - by a sizeable margin ahead of Brown and Huang who joined him on the PRO podium. Liang Jiatong and Brian Lee were first on the road in the PRO-AM class, but were later demoted to third for an incident with the Climax Racing pair of Lu Zhiwei and Ling Kang. That gave the class win to Cao Qikuan and Liu Kaishun, with fellow Climax Racing team mates Lu and Ling in second.

The first AM winners of the season after an eye-catching debut were Li Donghui and Li Dongsheng, completing a strong showing for series newcomers Climax Racing. Second were reigning Lamborghini Cup champions Hairie and Haziq Oh of HZO Fortis Racing Team by Absolute Racing, with Indonesia newcomers Umar Abdullah and Dypo Fitramadhan of Delta Garage Racing Team by Absolute Racing third on their debut. Earning the first Lamborghini Cup victory of the season was Thailand’s Weeraborwornpong from Prabakaran.

Race 2

Locking in the second pole of the season was race one winner, SJM Theodore Racing’s Charles Leong, this time taking the opening stint from PRO team mate Alex Denning. Malaysian Weiron Tan was fastest of the PRO-AM qualifiers in P4 overall for Arrows Racing, while quickest AM in the qualifying session was Leipert Motorsport’s solo driver Song Jiajun of China. In the Lamborghini Cup, this time Siamgas Corse’s Supachai Weeraborwornpong started ahead of class rival Kumar Prabakaran of Batmobile Racing.

Leong made neat work of the start, maximising his pole advantage to lead the charge into the opening series of turns. Behind him though, the field was tightly packed as Lamborghini Bundang by Racegraph’s Peter Li Zhicong, BC Racing’s Gavin Huang, Arrows Racing’s Weiron Tan – first of the PRO-AM drivers - and SQDA-GRIT Motorsport’s Liang Jiatong each sought to gain ground. Meanwhile, Haziq Oh led the AM pack for HZO Fortis Racing Team by Absolute Racing, while Lamborghini Cup driver Prabakaran found his way past rival and class pole-sitter Weeraborwornpong.

As Leong pulled out a gap at the front, Li defended valiantly from the chasing pack, but behind him Tan got past Huang and up to third, rapidly closing up to Li ahead. Further down the order though, Zagame Autosport’s Tim Macrow and DW Evans GT’s Nazim Azman were also soaring up the order and homing in on the front runners.

Despite an heroic defense, Li was overhauled by Tan for second, with both Macrow and Azman also finding their way by just before the pit window opened.

As the second stint unfurled, Denning took over the sizeable advantage built by Leong to resume the lead. Jonathan Cecotto emerged like lightning having taken the wheel from BC Racing team mate Huang at the changeover, rapidly climbing to fifth behind Leipert Motorsport’s Hampus Eriksson, SQDA-GRIT Motorsport’s Brian Lee and DW Evans GT’s Emilien Carde, with Denning up ahead.

Hairie Oh took over the lead of the AM class from brother Haziq, but an incident with Climax Racing’s Ling Kang at turn seven saw him spin and drop down the order. Ling was later penalised for the incident. The clash saw Leipert Motorsport’s Song Jiajun take up the class lead from True Vision Motorsports Thailand’s Suttiluck Buncharoen and Delta Garage Racing by Team Absolute’s Dypo Abdullah. However, the latter was handed a five second stop and go penalty for a short pit stop which knocked the team off the class podium.

In the tense closing minutes, Cecotto continued his charge, overtaking Lee to take third and into podium contention. The Monegasque was on a charge to take the fight to Carde ahead, but time was against him. At the flag, Denning crossed the line to take the win by a sizeable margin, followed home by Carde and Cecotto.

Lee took the PRO-AM victory alongside team mate Liang Jiatong ahead of Climax Racing’s Liu and Cao, and the Z.Speed duo of Chen Chunhua and Hopin Tung. Buncharoen took the AM honours from Li Donghui and Li Dongsheng, while solo Song joined them on the podium. After another close-fought battle, Weeraborwornpong took the Lamborghini Cup win from Prabakaran to lead the class championship after two races.
