Sant’Agata Bolognese/ Elkhart Lake, 19 September 2021 – Lamborghini is within touching distance of securing the Fanatec GT World Challenge America powered by AWS title following another double victory – the seventh and eighth respectively – of the year at Watkins Glen. Factory Driver Andrea Caldarelli and K-PAX Racing team-mate Jordan Pepper led both races from pole position in their #3 Lamborghini Huracán GT3 Evo to take a healthy points lead into the penultimate round of the season at Sebring next month.
The weekend began strongly for the pairing, following a tricky previous round at Road America, with Caldarelli and Pepper ending both of the practice sessions second quickest. Come qualifying though, the #3 car returned to form in spectacular fashion, claiming pole for each of the 90-minute races.
Pepper started Race 1 on Saturday and had to fend off the rapid BMW of Michael Dinan in the opening laps before establishing a comfortable, albeit slender, margin before handing over to Caldarelli at the compulsory driver-change pit-stops. Caldarelli then continued Pepper’s superb work in the second stint, eventually bringing the K-PAX car home 9.391s clear of the BMW at the finish.
It was a similar story in Race 2, with Caldarelli getting the best getaway from the rolling start to lead the early going from the Wright Motorsport Porsche of Jan Heylan. Despite briefly losing the lead to the Porsche after the pit-stops, Pepper soon made quick work of Fred Poordad’s 911 around the outside of Turn 5 to seize back the lead of the race.
Having struggled to ninth in Saturday’s opening race, the sister K-PAX Racing Huracán of Corey Lewis and Lamborghini Factory Driver Giovanni Venturini produced a sensational drive in Race 2 to finish a strong second place to Caldarelli and Pepper. Venturini started the race and survived small contact with another car at the first corner before switching over to experienced US racer Lewis.
A solid stint from the Pennsylvanian brought the #6 back into the mix and Lewis worked his way past Poordad’s Porsche, eventually finishing just under two seconds behind Caldarelli and Pepper come the chequered flag.
Lamborghini Factory Driver Mirko Bortolotti created history as he secured the first ever podium finish for the brand in Germany’s iconic DTM championship at Assen, The Netherlands. In a guest appearance for T3 Motorsport, Bortolotti impressed all weekend, setting the second fastest time in FP1 before qualifying third for Race 1.
A strong start gave Bortolotti second place as the field navigated through Turn 1 before the Italian briefly leading before his mandatory pit-stop. The #63 Lamborghini Huracán GT3 Evo finished just three seconds adrift of double series champion Marco Wittmann at the finish, producing the fastest lap of the race 1:34.317, while T3’s regular driver Esteban Muth finished eighth.
